TIPS FOR ZERO WASTE FASHION
No matter where you sourced your items, all clothing deserves to be given the best care possible. Less clothing waste means less environmental damage. Let’s look at some zero waste tips that will help you become an eco warrior.
WHEN YOU BUY
-Check the seams. No matter where you choose to purchase from always check the construction of an item.
-Check the fabric type. Get to know your fabrics, natural fibers breathe, synthetics don’t.
-Think about end of life. Everything you buy ends up somewhere when you are done with it. This should factor into your decision to bring an item into your closet. Avoid synthetic garments that pill or shed fibers, these end up in our waterways in the laundering process and contribute to oceanic plastic pollution.
-Realistically assess the cut, color, fit and style. Trends come and go so ask yourself  ‘Would I wear this five years from now?’ Contemplating this helps make more sustainability minded purchasing decisions.

KNOW YOUR FABRICS
Clothing has a limited lifespan so when you are shopping with zero waste goals look for the following fiber types:
- Cotton: Cotton is highly absorbent and very strong so it makes for great cleaning cloths when you clothing in no longer wearable. Your cotton can be composted and depending on conditions, can start to break down in a matter of weeks.
- Linen and Hemp: A strong natural fiber types linen and hemp readily breaks down in your compost
- Wool: When your wool item no longer serves you it can return to the earth in a few months to a few years depending on the fiber and the disposal conditions.
- Bamboo/Modal/Rayon/Viscose: These man-made fibers are created from natural cellulose and usually break down easily but it’s dependent on what processes they have been through or applied treatments.
- Silk: This lightweight natural fibre can last if carefully laundered and stored, but when you are ready to part ways with silk it is biodegradable.
