Pride + Juneteenth + Peel Art Opening + J Canteen

LET'S CELEBRATE HARD EARNED VICTORIES
June always marks a special place in the year for us. Not only are we half way through a tumultuous year, but it marks the beginning of summer with the solstice.

It's also a time to commemorate and celebrate hard won battles for freedom: Pride and Juneteenth. It's a reminder that even in the bleakest of times, when we come together and fight, we can affect real change.

Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." This meant that the proclamation only applied to states that had seceded from the United States, leaving slavery intact in border states and Southern states under Northern control. Two years later, after the end of the Civil War, the Union had to enforce emancipation. In Texas, approximately 250,000 people were still being held in slavery when, on June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston to announce that the war had ended and that all of the enslaved were now free.

On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York City. Patrons of the bar resisted the raid, sparking days of protests and clashes with law enforcement. The Stonewall Uprising was a turning point, galvanizing the growing gay rights movement.

We will celebrate this month. We will remember this month. We will galvanize ourselves this month for the continued battle over our freedom and autonomy.

HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF ON OUR WEBSITE
We are still reeling from the events that impacted our neighbors in the mountains, and we’re taking action by gathering GoFundMe campaigns and featuring them on our relief page. Many of the businesses we’ve reached out to that are still open have asked us to showcase their products, as they’re eager to attract autumn visitors. We’re also in the process of securing more of their offerings, so remember to think of Rebus when you begin your holiday shopping.

For more information on how you can help Western NC directly, go to our Hurricane Helene Relief page here.
